Research Into Music Magazine Contents Pages - Clash.
This contents page is glossy like the front of the magazine so it looks far more expensive than the newspaper type of paper than NME use. All together it looks very plain, there is a lot of white space but some how it works, it goes against the conventions of the Clash front cover because the front cover doesn't really have empty space on it. The contents page also has no yellow on it but it does have green on it.
The heading of the contents page is very small. It is at the right hand side of the page in the top corner, like it is not important. It is a serif font which is opposite to the front cover of the magazine. It also has a lot of white space next to and around the heading. This makes the magazine look less cluttered and quite clean.
These pictures are at the left hand side in a black box so they look organised, they are both the same size so they seem to have equal importance. The top picture is a medium shot. The band is arranged in a triangle so the front man looks far more important than the men at the back. The men all look quite clean even though one of them has a beard. The are all dressed the same; shirt and suit trousers so they are all linked as a band which makes them look cute and not like a heavy rock band so it doesn't go against the conventions of Clash. They all have a prop which are the glasses and the front man is holding out a toy laser gun which could represent the futuristic sound of the new band, both the glasses and the laser look very futuristic and they are both blue so they are linked.
The second picture is a picture of Pete Doherty who is also on the front cover of this magazine. This looks like it was from the same photo shoot as the one that was for the front cover. He is looking away from the camera and looking quite intimidating which fits with his usual image of looking rough. This is a medium shot but he has his knee up, you can see both of his hands and all the jewellery on them which again ties in with his image. The photo is in black and white like the cover photo which makes it look older which could suggest the magazine is for an older audience. He is represented as quite a tough, dominant male because he looks very aggressive in the picture and he is wearing all black which shows the rocky rough image he has.
For both captions the page number underneath the picture is the same size as the subheading so it stands out, it is also in white so it is noticeable against the black background. The subheading is bright green and it is a serif font which makes it look nice but it is still easy to read. The green stands out a lot against the black and it has no relevance to the front cover at all. The caption of the photo is 'Nine pages of the best new bands of 2009 and beyond' which links to the futuristic feel of the picture, although it is very small compared to the page number and heading it is still readable and it is still the same font and colour as the page number.
This stands out on the contents page because it is a green block so your eye is automatically drawn to it. The page number and subheading are the same size and colour which suggests they have equal importance to the reader, but the little bit of information is very small, it says 'All the best new bands of 2009 available for you to download.' This links to the caption of the first picture as they are both about new bands.

This is the actual writing on the contents page. It is set out in 3 different sections and each has 2 columns. The heading of each section is in a serif font which makes it look more up market. I like how the second word of the headings are bold and how there isn't a space between the two words.

The page numbers are in green which links the whole page together. They subheadings and the captions are all linked too because they are all the same size and they all have the caption smaller than the subheading. I don't like how this magazine has a fashion section, it should all be music not with a little splash of lifestyle too, but this could appeal to a female audience instead of a mainly male audience so it could bump up the magazines sales.
All together I do like this contents page and it will be a big help when making my own contents page because of the irrelevant, random colour and how neatly it is all set out. I think i would have to have a few more pictures on mine though!
